Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

The mission of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is to achieve the highest possible distinction in providing research, teaching, and service. The teaching mission has two crucial aspects. The first is the education of students in the scientific method through the medium of chemistry. The second is the education and training of professional chemists and biochemists to the highest standards of competence and integrity at the levels of the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.

Department of Coastal Sciences

The department of Coastal Sciences is a research and graduate education department offering programs leading to the doctorate and master of science degrees. The department offers excellent opportunities for students to immerse themselves in applied as well as basic research to help the state of Mississippi and the nation better protect, manage, and enhance its marine resources. Investigator-and institution-initiated research programs support graduate and postdoctoral students in investigations of marine fisheries, marine aquaculture, environmental and animal health, marine bilogy, coastal chemistry, coastal geology, and marine science teacher education.

School of Computing

The School of Computing embraces its mission in research and graduate education (discovery), undergraduate education (learning), and outreach (engagement and economic development) in Computer Science, Engineering and Technology. Our vision is to combine excellent faculty, state-of-the-art research laboratories, and a well-funded research program to provide opportunities for a stimulating academic environment that nurtures leading edge research and innovative education in Computer Science, Engineering and Technology. The spectrum of computing disciplines offered in the school and their complementary nature is unique and allows the school to offer a strong, diverse series of programs centered around computing, from the infrastructure designer's to the end user's point of view.

School of Construction

The School of Construction offers three Bachelor of Science degree programs with direct application to industry. Architectural Engineering Technology and Industrial Engineering Technology are accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (TAC-ABET). The Construction Engineering Technology program is dually accredited by both TAC-ABET and the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE). The school also offers a two-year pre-engineering program, a two-year pre-architecture program, and a master of science in engineering technology (with emphases in Construction Management and Industrial Engineering).

Department of Economic and Workforce Development

The Department of Economic and Workforce Development offers a unique combination of economic, workplace and technology development that equips professionals with the skills they need to help their communities compete in today’s new economy. The Department of Economic and Workforce Development at The University of Southern Mississippi offers innovative courses for economic development and training professionals looking to further their education.

Department of Geography and Geology

Whether you are interested in our undergraduate or graduate programs, or simply continuing your academic studies, we have plenty to offer here at the University of Southern Mississippi. The University of Southern Mississippi's Department of Geography and Geology prepares students, through B.S and M.S. degrees in Geography and Geology.  Our graduates are employed in the environmental industry, including consulting firms and state and federal agencies, and hold vital positions in federal agencies including the Stennis Space Center. Combined, our small faculty has over 140 years of teaching experience.

Gulf Coast Research Laboratory

The Universiy of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs is a research and education enterprise that coordinates multidisciplinary, applications-oriented research mainly related to marine resources. GCRL's facilities and fleet of vessels supprt the faculty of the Department of Coastal Sciences as well as research centers. Educational opportunities sited at the GCRL include graduate programs in coastal sciences and a summer marine field program that draws graduate and undergraduate students from throughtout the United States.

Department of Marine Science

The University of Southern Mississippi's Department of Marine Science is home to a multidisciplinary program of graduate study and research in marine environments. Located at Stennis Space Center, the Department of Marine Science is strategically situated at the single largest concentration of oceanographers and hydrographers in the world. Thirteen on-site faculty members hail from the world's most prestigious oceanographic research institutions.

Department of Mathematics

Ther are two undergraduate degree programs in mathematics. The Math B.S. degree program is the nonteaching degree. It requires that you earn a minor. The Math L.B.S. degree program in lieu of a minor provides licensure to teach at the secondary level. The Department of Mathematics offers the master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees. It is a participant in offering the doctor of philosophy degree in computing with an emphasis in computational mathematics. In addition, it offers through the Center for Science and Mathematics Education the doctor of philosophy degree in science education with an emphasis in mathematics.

Department of Physics and Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers research-intensive educational opportunities at the bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. level, including a Ph.D. in computational physics through the scientific computing program. The department is an active participant in the recently funded Response-Driven Polymeric Films Center, and NSF-funded Materials Research Science and Engineering Center, and also leads efforts at the universiy's Signal Research Center to develop novel optical technologies.
